The Office of the State Fire Marshal is issuing a state-wide variance from certain requirements of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code relating to the means of egress for child care center, preschool, and head start (CCC/PS/HS) locations. This variance extends the state-wide variance for add on security devices for classroom doors in all K-12 and postsecondary educational buildings in Kansas to CCC/PS/HS locations. These devices are designed to prepare for and respond to active shooter and lock down situations in the classroom. 

CCC/PS/HS providers should contact the Office of the State Fire Marshal with any questions about the types of devices that have been approved under this policy. CCC/PS/HS providers must inform their local fire, law enforcement, and first responder community of the types of devices they install so that responding personnel know what to expect during any type of response.
