School InspectionThe Prevention Division works to reduce the potential impact of fire and explosion hazards where people live, work, and congregate. This team focuses on inspecting facilities which pose distinct fire hazards and where the potential loss of life from fire is very high.

The division is also responsible for the promotion of fire safety and the education of building owners, operators, and occupants, and the general public. Both office and field personnel are active educators, presenting a variety of program topics across the state of Kansas.

Our office even employs a dedicated Education Consultant to work with local fire and law enforcement jurisdictions, helping to educate kids on fire safety and prevent them from starting fires.

Technology Support Consultant III

The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has an opening for a Full-time Unclassified Technology Support Consultant III.  This is advanced technical work advising and assisting computer users in solving problems in a distributed computing environment.  Serves as senior consultant and/or subject matter expert providing consultation to users and staff for the most complex problems.  Work includes installation of hardware and software, troubleshooting, configuring client server based application software for LAN, server hardware, operating systems and application systems in a WAN environment; provides technical consultation and training to users.  Includes troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving LAN and client server data and communications problems involving complex configuration and maintenance of network equipment that requires incumbents to understand varied network operating systems and communications protocols.  Work is of a diversified nature that usually involves multiple unrelated steps.  Analytical thought is necessary for dealing with complex data and situations and requires planning or carrying out a sequence of actions. 


Full time, unclassified with benefits, Rate of Pay - $46,092.80 - 56,118.40 annually based on experience.


Minimum Requirements:  High school diploma or equivalent and two years advising and assisting computer users in a distributed computing environment.  Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.


Preferred Requirements:  Thorough knowledge of computer capabilities, equipment techniques and personnel utilization.  Thorough knowledge of activities related to voice, video and data communications, computer processing, work processing and database concepts.  extensive knowledge of user agency information technology requirements and the ability to integrate these into software plans.  Ability to prepare technical and non-technical reports in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.  Ability to communicate effectively.  MCSC, CISCO Firewall experience, SQL Server, Server 2003, Server 2208R2 & Hyper V, and Server 2012 Operating System experience.  Windows XP Client, Windows 7 and Windows 8 experience and Network experience desired.


Licenses, Certifications & Registration:  Must have a current, valid Kansas driver's license.


Performance Standards:  To be successful, the expectation is that a candidate will be able to competently perform the routine tasks of the position with limited supervision within six (6) months of hire date.
