Kansas Search and Rescue teams deployed in Eureka tornado

We are thankful to those first responders who are trained and ready when disaster strikes.

A search and rescue response team was recently deployed to assist with a southeast Kansas tornado. At approximately 9:45 pm on July 7th, 2016 a thunderstorm northwest of Eureka produced an EF2 tornado that struck the City of Eureka.

search and rescue team in eureka kansasInitial reports from law enforcement reported heavy tree damage and other reports of structural damage in northern portions of the city.  It was originally reported that the Greenwood County Hospital and Eureka Nursing Center sustained damage, however it was later determined that the hospital was not affected; however minor damage was reported at the nursing center.

Greenwood County Emergency Management requested the SEKS Incident Management Team for assistance, who in turn requested Kansas Task Force 4 to assist with secondary search and damage assessment in several areas.  Additionally, the OSFM deployed the state Search & Rescue Coordinator and two K9 teams to assist.

Eureka tornado responseAfter an initial briefing from the IMT/IC, search squads were assigned to conduct a secondary search and damage assessment in three areas of town with significant damage, as well a rural area of Greenwood County, northwest of Eureka. All assignments were completed and KS-TF4 units were debriefed and returned to service at approximately 12:30 pm.
