Training Opportunities

There are numerous opportunities for those in the fire service, as well as those concerned with fire safety, to receive training on a variety of topics. The following are Kansas and national agencies that offer training opportunities.

Fire Marshals Association of Kansas (FMAK)

The Fire Marshals Association of Kansas strives to unite the fire service of Kansas, as well as supporting industry into a group with similar goals and professional standards and ethics. Our objectives are to:

  • Provide and improve fire and life safety for the citizens of Kansas
  • Bring together fire service professionals of Kansas to discuss and solve fire and life safety issues
  • Provide quality fire inspections and investigations across Kansas
  • Promote fire safety and assure favorable support from the citizens of Kansas
  • Standardize the codes and regulations used by fire prevention professionals in Kansas

Kansas Chapter - International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI)

The Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute was created in 1949 by Kansas law to provide training for the Kansas Fire Service. The Institute is a dynamic organization providing training services through a Mobile Fire Academy concept. This concept is designed to accommodate local needs through training delivered anytime, anyplace, or anywhere in Kansas.

Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute

Fire Officer Training

Fire Officer training includes all courses targeted for audiences that include "Company" through "Chief" level officers. Topics include NIMS incident command training, Leadership courses, firefighting strategy and many other topics designed to enhance fire officer development.

The Kansas Propane Education & Research Council (KanPERC)

Under the provisions of House Bill 2038 and the Kansas Propane Education and Research Act (KanPERA) of 2003, the propane industry in Kansas was authorized and directed to establish the Kansas Propane Education and Research Council (KanPERC) and to collect funds for the use of research, education, and safety education. KanPERC is designed to enhance propane safety, education, and training for propane consumers and employees; to improve existing propane technology; to increase the efficiency of propane; and to develop other programs to educate the public about the safety, environmental aspects, and uses of propane.

Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs (KSAFC)

Our mission is to provide the chief fire officers and managers of emergency services in Kansas with a forum to discuss issues and dispense information applicable to life safety and property conservation, and to provide education, services and representation to enhance the professionalism and capabilities of the fire service.

Kansas State Firefighters Association (KSFFA)

The Kansas State Firefighters Association was established in 1887 and has continued to be a local fire department's best and most reliable resource for establishing and maintaining safety, professionalism and preparedness. Through services provided by the Association, member departments are enabled to provide a high degree of skill and efficiency in the emergency response services they provide in the communities in Kansas.

Midwest Search & Rescue

Midwest Search and Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit corporation dedicated to building on public, private, and corporate partnerships to ensure that the search and rescue assets in Kansas are prepared to respond when needed. The primary purpose of the organization is to promote and support the sustainment and furtherance of the search and rescue capability in Kansas by providing or augmenting training, equipment, consulting, and response.

State Capitol Area Firefighters Association (SCAFFA)

The mission of State Capitol Area Firefighters Association (SCAFFA) is to foster and encourage a high degree of skill and efficiency, the education and study of fire prevention and fire extinguishment, the cultivation of friendship and fellowship, and to work for any cause advantageous to the firefighters of Shawnee County and surrounding areas.
